FARES & TICKETS

To Ride MATS Fixed Routes:

Simply insert your payment (cash only) into the fare box, located next to the driver, upon boarding. Please use exact fare, neither the fare box nor the bus driver are able to make change.

For those eligible for reduced fare, we encourage you to apply for a reduced fare photo ID.

Effective Fall of 2020, passes will only be able to be purchased at either the Herman Ivory Terminal, 351 Morris Street or the MATS Administration Building, 2624 Sixth Street. As MATS bus passes are provided by a number of local agencies and non-profit organizations, MATS has a strict “NO CASH REFUND” for any single-ride or monthly bus pass.

If you are transferring, present your transfer slip to the bus driver upon boarding. Transfers are free and valid for 30 minutes and must be requested upon boarding. They are intended for use to complete a one-way trip and are not valid on issuing route or for return trips.

Reduced Fare: The Reduced Fare is available to seniors (age 65 and over) and persons with disabilities with a valid MATS Reduced Fare Card. Seniors may be asked to show proof of age and are encouraged to apply for a MATS Reduced Fare Photo ID. Persons with disabilities and Medicare cardholders must show a MATS Reduced Fare Card as proof of eligibility. For more information on reduced fares, contact Customer Care at 231-724-6420.

Reserve-A-Ride Fares

General Public  – $4.00, per one-way trip, per person.

Children under 42” may ride free when accompanied by an adult, but must be mentioned at time of reservation.

Reduced Fare/Senior – is $2.00, per one-way trip, per person.

To be eligible to pay the Reduced Fare, you must be:

  • A Senior (age 65 or over) with photo id showing proof of age
  • A Person with a Disability with one of the following:
    • A current MATS fixed route “Reduced Fare Card”
      • Applications available at HERE
      • Includes access options for Medicare Cardholders
    • A current MATS ADA Complementary Paratransit Card
    • Or be a previously registered user of the GoBus program at MATS
Special Fares

In recognition of MATS Fixed Route service changes, an additional and temporary special fare policy is in place for essential travel trips on Reserve-A-Ride to or from a home or business west of Henry Street.  For these trips, the above fare rates will be scheduled at the time of booking, but the passenger, upon boarding, may use any of the following items to satisfy the required fare payment:

  • A MATS 10-ride bus pass
  • A MATS Round-trip or Single-trip bus pass
  • A currently valid MATS monthly bus pass

REDUCED FARES

To access MATS reduced fares eligible disabled and Medicare Card customers must apply for, and be approved for, a new MATS reduced-fare card. Seniors are also encouraged to apply, but may instead continue to show a photo ID as proof of age.

  1. Drop off the completed application and all supporting documentation in person. Enclose your application in a sealed envelope marked MUSKEGON AREA TRANSIT SYSTEM REDUCED-FARE CARD PROGRAM.  Deliver the envelope to the MATS Customer Care Center between the Scheduled Hours of 10:00am to 4:00pm, Monday-Friday at:
